Vance Joy - 'Riptide' Official Video

This the song I have chosen to do for my music video.

Narrative behind the video:

Vance Joy himself wrote the lyrics to the song 'Riptide'. The word 'Riptide' actually means a tide in the sea that pulls everything in, it happens around every five years in America and kills around 200-500 people every time. Vance Joy uses the word 'Riptide' as a metaphor for fame. He is basically saying that people see being famous as fun from the outside, but then gradually get sucked in by it. This is reflected in the lyric of the song when it says 'all my friends are turning green', which could mean they are turning green because they are jealous of other famous people or, as the video depicts, they are turning green because they are becoming obsessed with money and becoming famous.

What's its purpose?

The purpose of any music video is to promote the singer/band. In this music video, Vance Joy is in it briefly but only if you are a massive fan of his would you notice him. As just a viewer, he is not seen and therefore this video is very narrative, just showing images of what the song is saying. However, the style of the photos give the sense of retro and vintage.

How do they objectify women/men?

This video has little reference to objectifying men or women however in one section of the video, a woman is seen to be taking her bathing suit off and shows women as these mystical creatures. This is reflected by the line in the song, 'I was scared of pretty girls'.

How is the star objectified?

The star of this song, Vance Joy is not actually in it. The video is narrative video and depicts what the song is saying.

How do they reflect their genre?
The genre of Vance Joy's music would be Indie, and I think this is portrayed in this video by the use of the retro images in the music video. The use of the women's costumes in the this video is used to portray a retro, old timey feeling.

Does this music fit the criteria of a successful music video?

Although I love this song, the music video is not one of my favourites.I like the idea of the retro clothing, and I will be using this idea in my own video. But I don't like the narrative of the video, although the meaning behind it is really good.
